Standing in profile whilst playing. The term ?hautboist? (pronounced ?oboist?) was originally used to describe an oboist (from ?hautbois?, the French word for oboe). In the 18th century, this evolved into the term ?Hoboist? for a military musician in a band. In the infantry of the German Army, the word remained in use until around the First World War.
