A plague doctor?s attire consisted of a waxed cloth cloak serving as a protective suit, a beaked mask with two glass eye openings, gloves and a staff. This allowed contact with the infected to be avoided.
The beak of the mask was filled with fragrances such as juniper, amber, lemon balm, spearmint, camphor, cloves, myrrh, roses or styrax. It was believed that this would protect against the plague.
