The youngest recruit. The painter Robert Warthmüller (1859?1895) produced many historical depictions of Frederick the Great, which enjoyed great popularity during the painter?s lifetime. He was therefore also known as the ?Fridericus Painter?. ?He drew inspiration for many significant, well-known paintings from the life and deeds of the great king and his soldiers.? (from the obituary by Prof. L. Pietsch). Among these is the painting ?The Youngest Recruit?. The series of pewter figurines was engraved based on the central scene of this tranquil, humorous painting, which, in contrast to the martial war scenes of other painters, allows us to share in a rural evening?s rest. The painting was purchased by Emperor Wilhelm I.
