Samurai. The Tokugawa shogunate required the feudal lords to maintain their families in the capital Edo at all times and to reside in their province or in Edo on an annual basis. The families thus served as hostages of the shogunate, so to speak. The series shows the travelling train of a prince. The prince is carried in a palanquin, his horse is led behind him. The samurai of his retinue escort him. Servants and ashigaru (paid foot soldiers) carry weapons and luggage. Office: MAN.
