Light troops (velites)
(archers, spearthrowers and javelin-men)
This kind of troops were used throughout the whole antique history of war. These soldiers stood in front of the phalanx or on the flanks and opened the battle with a hail of arrows, spears, stones or pieces of lead. When the heavy armoured hoplits advanced, the light troops retreated behind the Phalanx of the "heavies". If the battle happened in difficult terrain, the use of light troops could be decisive for the warlord. In greek armies, very often the light troops were formed from citizens from the poorer classes, who could not afford the expensive armour. During the peloponesian war some desperate cities freed slaves, if they enlisted in the light troops and fight for their freedom.

Hoplites
The wealthy greek citizens who could afford armour and weapons served in the Hoplites. They had a helmet, breastplate and protections for arms and legs as well as a heavy shield. The decoration on the armour or the helmet-crest was individual. Main weapons were the short sword and the long lance. The Hoplites fought in a dense formation called the Phalanx. such a powerfull mass of armored warriors needs naturally a plain battlefield for manouevre and once the advance started the direction could not changed anymore. The phalanx advanced under a martial sound of war horns and tried to split up the formation of the enemy. In the first line stood the veteran soldiers. The size of the phalanx could be different, the phalanx of Athens hat up to 100 colums of 8 ranks. So our set with 66 figures presents 10 per cent of an antique phalanx and gives a nearby realistic picture of ancient warfare. The smaller sets shall be supplementss for the big sets, all musicians and officers are included. Our sets can be used war all antique greek wars.
