The hoplites fought in a closed formation, the phalanx. If one side was put to flight, the battle was decided because many fighters threw away their heavy shield as they fled. It was not possible to fight again without the shield. This made the battles more dogged, but they were probably also shorter and usually clearly decided. -Wikipedia-

Series list for 100/29/1/1
No. 100-1401 (1x) Greek hoplite leader, spear. The throwing spears of the peltasts, were fitted with a loop at the end of the shaft, called the ankyle. To throw, the peltast put his index and middle fingers into the loop and held the shaft with his other fingers. The loop enabled him to throw the spear with great precision and force. -Wikipedia-

Series list for 100/29/8
No. 100-1444 (4x) Greek slinger in battle
No. 100-1436 (4x) Greek archer in battle Bowman in battle
No. 100-1445 (1x) Heap of stones
No. 100-1437 (4x) Greek archer in battle Archer in battle
No. 100-1446 (3x) Greek javelin thrower in battle
No. 100-1438 (2x) Arrows stuck in the ground
No. 100-1447 (3x) Greek javelin thrower in battle
No. 100-1439 (2x) Heap of arrows on the ground
No. 100-1448 (3x) Greek javelin thrower in battle
No. 100-1440 (2x) Heap of arrows on the ground
No. 100-1441 (2x) Greek bowman Archer, shooting arrows, in battle
No. 100-1442 (6x) Greek stone thrower in battle
No. 100-1443 (6x) Greek slinger in battle

At the same time, they were better protected by their shields against other, even lighter-armed foot troops such as archers and stone-slingers, and were thus superior to them at short range or in close combat. -Wikipedia-

Series list for 100/29/7
No. 100-1392 (4x) Greek javelin thrower
No. 100-1387 (5x) Greek javelin thrower Archer
No. 100-1388 (5x) Greek archer Bowman
No. 100-1389 (8x) Greek slinger
No. 100-1390 (8x) Greek slinger
No. 100-1391 (5x) Greek javelin thrower

The hoplites fought in a closed formation, the phalanx. If one side was put to flight, the battle was decided because many fighters threw away their heavy shield as they fled. It was not possible to fight again without the shield. The battles thus became more bitter, but were probably also shorter and usually clearly decided.
