Description
Fort Sumter is a fort on a man-made island at the entrance from the Atlantic Ocean into Charleston Bay in South Carolina. The fort gained its historical significance as the site of the first military engagement of the American Civil War (Northern States/Southern States), which began at 4:30 a.m. on 12 April 1861.
For months, the Confederacy demanded surrender from Union troops at the fort and attempted to starve it out. At the same time, the Confederate States Army built an artillery position on the southwestern island so that in the event of war, Fort Sumter could be shelled from there. In January 1861, a Union supply ship for Fort Sumter was fired upon by the new artillery position on the coast and had to turn away. On 1 February, all the women and children were able to leave the fort for the northern states. 86 men remained: 10 officers and 76 non-commissioned officers and enlisted men-Wikipedia- After a painting.
