In the 15th and 16th centuries, peasant servants developed into warrior mercenaries (Kriegsknechte) who, because they were poor, went to war on foot rather than on horseback as was customary. The first of these mercenaries came from Memmingen. They followed Georg von Frundsberg, the father of the Landsknechte, as an ensign in the War of the Bavarian Succession and fought for Emperor Maximilian I in the Battle of Bohemia at Schönburg am Wenzenberg (near Regensburg on 15 September 1504). Contrary to the traditional dress rituals, the lansquenets appeared in a variety of "costumes" and thus represented a troop of mercenaries that could not have been more colourful. Their distinguishing marks were a pole-like lance called a pike and a halberd. (Pike: Order: No.: 8099/NSS102)
