Today, Tempelhof Field is mostly associated with the airport, Nazi architecture, and the Berlin Airlift but its significance extends far beyond that. Over 200 years of German history are condensed into its 350 hectares: agriculture and parades, the central airport and forced labor, concentration camps and concerts, migration and the military, as well as recreation and, finally, the referendum on its use as a leisure area. The many historical layers overlap, influence one another, and yet can be individually uncovered. Bjoern Weigel makes them visible and places Tempelhof Field within the broader context of German history.
