Prince Wilhelm of Prussia (19061940) was regarded as a beacon of hope in monarchist circles after his grandfather and father fled into exile following the end of the German Empire in 1918. The emperor's eldest grandson was extremely popular and made headlines on several occasions. In 1927, for example, when an impostor fooled Thuringia's high society by using his name, or in 1933, when he married his childhood sweetheart against his family's wishes and was subsequently forced to renounce his inheritance. In 1938, Prince Wilhelm was involved in plans for a conspiracy and was to be installed as people's king after Hitler's removal from power. In 1940, he was seriously wounded as an officer in the war against France. The spontaneous participation of 50,000 people in his funeral angered the Nazi regime and led to members of the Hohenzollern family no longer being deployed at the front.
