Surprisingly, Napoleon read Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther several times - and on the other hand, Goethe was an admirer of Napoleon. Goethe considered it one of his greatest honours when he was received in a personal audience by Napoleon in Erfurt on 2 October 1808.
