In an incomprehensible way, Luther's ideas on the Reformation also reached the Cistercian convent of Marienthron in Nimbschen near Grimma. Katharina von Bora and other nuns asked Luther for help in leaving the convent. In the night before Easter in the year 1523, Leonhard Koppe, councillor at Torgau and confidant of the Court Prince, drove up with 2 younger relatives in Nimbschen with a planned carriage and helped 9 nuns to escape, which led via Torgau to Wittenberg. According to ecclesiastical and secular law, kidnapping nuns was punishable by death. In Wittenberg, Luther first had a collection organised at the Electoral Court.
