The Zaporozhian Cossacks (also: Zaporozhian Cossacks, from Ukrainian "German: Land behind the rapids") are credited by Ukrainian historiography with the founding of an autonomous Ukrainian state formation in the 17th century, the Zaporozhian Sitsh. This "Cossack state" was unable to assert itself between the great powers of Eastern Europe at the time, the Republic of Poland-Lithuania, the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire. In 1775, with the destruction of the Sitsh by Fürst Potjomkin, free Cossackism was finally abolished. -Wikipedia-
