The knights always came from the nobility and had to have received their knighthood before joining the order. They were the only ones (besides the chaplains of the rank of bishop or higher) who were entitled to the white cloak over the black or brown housecoat, and they also had three horses (a warhorse, a riding horse and a packhorse). However, four horses of a selected breed were at the disposal of the knights and officials. The knights had to bring their complete and very expensive equipment (especially the chains and the horses) into the order. -Wikipedia-
