Spartiates were the full citizens of Sparta. During the 6th century BC, when Sparta was in bloom, they numbered about 8,000 men, but this number decreased after the Persian Wars. With a population of the Lacedaemonian state of about 50,000 (excluding slaves), they were a ruling minority. Therefore, it was tantamount to a disaster if a few hundred Spartans were killed in a single battle, as in the Battle of Thermopylae or the Battle of Leuktra, or captured, as on Sphakteria in the Peloponnesian War. By the 3rd century BC the number was barely 1000 men
