The Battle of Thermopylae, which lasted several days, took place at the beginning of the Second Persian War, probably around 11 August 480 BC. On that day, a large Persian army under King Xerxes I was ready to fight. The Persians, far outnumbered, were able to force a breakthrough and wear down the remaining Greek forces. The majority of the Greeks retreated in time.
