The signifer (Latin signum = "sign", ferre = "to bear, to bring") was the bearer of the field sign of a centurie in the Römic militär. He belonged to the principales (approximately non-commissioned officers/sergeants) and received double pay. âußerally, signiferi were very distinguished, as they wore a special helmet that could be closed with a mask and to which the präparated head of a predator's hide (wolf, löwe, bär) was attached. -Wikipedia-
