Before the battle of Lützen, the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf appointed the already war-experienced young Duke Bernard of Weimar as his deputy, just in case. And it came as feared. After the king's death in the battle at about 1 p.m., the duke and another general in Swedish service, Dodo Freiherr zu Imhausen und Knyphausen, consulted on how to continue the battle. The ambitious Bernad von Weimar in particular is said to have insisted on the continuation of the battle. Bernad von Weimar commanded the Swedish left wing, which was engaged in heavy fighting with heavy losses against the enemy's right centre. Above all, the firing imperial battery of fourteen heavy guns at the Lützen windmills tore large gaps in the attacking Swedish brigades. In addition, there were counterattacks by the imperial infantry. Several times the Swedish brigades gave way and had to be persuaded to attack again by the commanders. Bernhard von Weimar commanded the first meeting of the Swedish left wing directly next to the infantry brigades engaged in heavy fighting.
