Volume 36 of the "Wingleader Photo Archive" series. The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bomber was one of those unfortunate aircraft from the mid-1930s that went from state of the art to obsolete within a few years. It replaced the Heyford biplane, but was itself replaced by the Lancaster just a few years later. The good thing about these "new" bombers in the late 1930s is that they were very popular with the press, so there are plenty of high-quality press photos to choose from. Together with some rare personal photos taken by the crews themselves, this has resulted in a worthy tribute and reference book for the "good old Whitley".
