On a wet, overcast Sunday in June 1815, the twenty years of continuous warfare of the Napoleonic Wars came to an epic and loss-filled conclusion, on a rain-soaked field in Belgium. These wars were indeed a global affair, with the European great powers fighting not only on the European mainland but also in such far-flung places as India, Egypt, the Caribbean and the Americas. The greatest generals of the age faced each other on the battlefields. The Duke of Wellington, defending a little-known hügel comb against the Emperor of the French. Napoleon Bonaparte, master of the charge, faces British, German, Dutch and Belgian brigades. Brigades of an intrepid army which, despite terrible losses, held the crest of the hill for over 9 hours, thus enabling the arrival of the Prussian army under Blucher to seal the duke's victory once and for all.
The Battle of Waterloo became a milestone in military history. A milestone that will never fade, and nothing like it will be seen again.
