US Army Infantry Squad (Winter)

When America entered World War II in late December 1941, it went to war superbly equipped and supplied. By 1944, when its troops pushed onto the mainland of Europe, it did so well-armed and well-dressed. However, like most armies of the period, they were unprepared for the bitter winter that hit Europe in 1944-1945. General issue greatcoats and woollen gloves were insufficient to stave off the biting cold, leading to units seeking cover for days in an effort just to keep warm.
The practical Americans adapted and modified their kit to suit the environment, adding extra clothing brought up by their inexhaustible supply lines. Homemade snowsuits also appeared, frequently made from looted bed sheets from captured or liberated towns. Gloves of all kinds were valuable as were captured warm weather clothing.
As a result, a late war GI squad in the winter would be a strange-looking unit with a mix of greatcoats, Mackinaw jackets, scarves, etc. So, whether fighting in the Ardennes or in Germany itself, the contents of this box perfectly represent the look of these cold but determined soldiers.
