In 1809, at the Battle of Wagram, some Polish light cavalrymen fought alongside Napoleon. They made use of captured Austrian lances and demonstrated their effectiveness in battle. Impressed by this, Bonaparte ordered the formation of nine regiments modelled on the Polish cavalrymen.
With their nine-foot-long lances, to which red and white pennants were attached, and their shiny classic helmets, they cut a fine figure not only on the battlefield. These lancers had rather unusual tasks in the battle lines of the French and were most often used as scouts, for quick âberfälle, and especially in Spain and Russia, decisively in Scharmützeln. Armed with lances, sabres, and occasionally carbines as well as pistols, the French lancers were a dangerous and not to be underestimated opponent!
