At about 4:20 p.m., the battle of Rorkes Drift had begun. By 2:00 a.m. the next day the majority of the fighting had ended - harassing fire from the Zulu rifles lasted until 4:00 a.m. Some 11 hours later, it was finally over. The garrison had sustained 14 dead, two more were mortally wounded and eight more were seriously wounded. Every man had some kind of wound - from minor cuts and abrasions to deep, penetrating blade and gunshot wounds. Some sustained burns in the hospital fire, others broken bones from a knobkerries blow. All were exhausted, having fought in the desperate, hand-to-hand struggle for nearly half a day.
