This Grenadier is a drummer of the 1st Regiment of Imperial Guard Grenadiers during the Napoleonic Wars. The drum was the preferred method of delivering signals and movement on the battlefield as it was loud enough to be heard over the din of combat. On campaign a Grenadier drummers rhythm would direct line infantry into various movements and formations during battle. Various rudiments played by a drummer were essentially specific calls of movement or commands for the Line Infantry or the Grenadiers. It was considered a great honor to be a snare drummer in Napoleons elite French Imperial Guard.
