This volume concludes the sixth part - infantry - of the complete work. It deals with the Landsturm infantry battalions, which were formed as purely wartime formations only at the time of mobilisation and were disbanded again at the end of the war. Initially, only about 330 Landsturm battalions were planned, but in the course of the war a total of about 850 battalions were formed. They were primarily intended for use at home, but a total of 530 battalions were sent into the field, where they were deployed in the staging areas, sometimes also on quieter sections of the front. Since 1915, numerous battalions at the front were combined to form a total of 50 Landsturm regiments, which are treated in the same way as composite battalions that existed only temporarily. For the first time, this volume presents the territorial division of the army corps into Landwehr districts, which was decisive not only for the formation of the Landsturm battalions, but for the entire replacement system.
Detailed maps illustrate the subdivision of the Landwehr districts into conscription districts, which corresponded to the civilian districts. In addition, this volume also deals with those infantry formations that were stationed in the homeland. These included the garrison troops set up for guard and work purposes and the border guard troops, insofar as they were set up before the end of the war. Finally, the infantry training formations, such as schools and numerous training courses, especially for officer candidates and non-commissioned officers, are also included. All formations are presented individually in their development. In addition, the essential data on their organisation, especially on formation, reorganisation and disbandment, are presented in a clear form, supplemented by information on the units that provided the replacements. Special emphasis is placed on the subordination of the units to authorities at home or to army units in the field. On the basis of the frequently changing subordinations and assignments, the path of the troops during the war can be followed almost without gaps.
About the complete work: "Handbuch der Verbände und Truppen des deutschen Heeres 1914-1918". This series is the first to present an overview of all the associations and troops of the German Army in the First World War. Although the general interest in this period has experienced a strong upswing, there has been a lack of a reference work that can reliably provide information on the formations of the army and its divisions. This lack is to be remedied by the present complete work, which not only contains all the war formations ever established, but also traces the changing war structure of the army. The elaboration is based almost exclusively on hitherto unknown contemporary sources, which the author was able to evaluate through years of research in the relevant archives. With the help of expert assistants, it was possible to process the immense amount of data and to put it into a clear form. Due to the immense scope of the army and the large number of individual data processed, the complete work is estimated at 20 volumes, with the individual volumes appearing in each case according to the state of processing.
