With the founding of the German Empire in 1871, the military, the state and society in Germany entered into a close relationship. What is the significance of the military in such different political systems as the Empire, the Weimar Republic, the "Third Reich" and the Federal Republic? What remains unchanged is the overriding influence of the so-called top military division, which also includes the supreme command of the German armed forces and thus decides on their deployment in war.
Rudolf J. Schlaffer examines the share of the top military division in the military successes and failures and shows that the associated regulation of the supreme command is still the concise expression of the close connection between the social, political and military system in Germany today.
