Special Forces function as strategic high-value instruments in armies worldwide. They have gained considerable military importance in recent years, not only in the NATO countries. And it remains foreseeable that this will not change even with a return to national and alliance defence. The tasks of military special forces include special reconnaissance, combat operations against strategically or operationally important targets (direct action), military assistance, the fight against terrorism (counter-terrorism) as well as hostage rescue and recovery operations.
Special forces perform their operational tasks worldwide and in all climatic zones - often in areas that are difficult to access and/or controlled by the enemy or in hostile environments. Key success factors for Special Forces operations are secrecy, good intelligence and operational planning as well as determination, speed and precision.
