The Zweibrücken airport, planned and built by the French occupation authorities in the early 1950s, still has a chequered history, which is documented here with over 530 photos. The first user of the airport was the Canadian Air Force, at the beginning with the CL-13 "Sabre" and at the end in 1969 with the CF-104 "Starfighter". The Americans took over the base immediately after the withdrawal. They stationed "Phantom" jets in different variants and later "Sherpa" transports at the base in the Western Palatinate. After the end of the Cold War, the base was returned to Germany in October 1991.
The state and the municipality decided to resume air traffic. Well-known airlines flew from Zweibrücken: Germanwings, TUIfly, Germania, to name but a few. The end of commercial air traffic by the EU in 2014 was a shock for the region. Triwo AG bought the airfield, continues flight operations and wants to offer tourist flights with a DC-3 Dakota.
