The armed forces of the United States have played a decisive role in Germany's post-war history. Unlike their presence in other countries, such as France or Great Britain, the development of the US Air Force as the second strongest branch of the armed forces on German soil has not yet been documented in a comprehensive manner. This publication, which is the result of many years of research, aims to fill this gap. The treatise will comprise several volumes covering the history of the American Air Force units stationed in Germany, their equipment, and their bases. The first volume contains a historical overview of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) as the highest command authority and higher staff (air fleets and air divisions), as well as the first part of the history of the squadrons.
