World War I: The battle on the Western Front had stalled into a tough war of position. In order to win a decisive victory, the German General Falkenhayn planned a major attack for February 1916 against a section of the front that the French could not possibly abandon: Verdun, important fortress and national symbol. However, the German offensive did not achieve the desired success.
