The Nahkampfspange in Gold was awarded less frequently than even the Ritterkreuz. Its prestige was correspondingly high. With the greatest care, the author has gone through all the information and documents on this subject once again. Since the 4th edition, 20 more bearers have been identified: Only two of them were found in archives, so that the archives have now been completely evaluated - with the exception of any chance finds - and can be verified by means of a soldier's book or award certificate. The author assumes that fundamentally new findings on the wearers of the Nahkampfspange in Gold are not to be expected in the future and that this 5th edition will probably remain the definitive one.
With it, 662 wearers have been documented to date, richly illustrated with countless (partly also new) photos and facsimiles of recipients and original documents (also rare ones). Thus, this volume may be considered the definitive reference work on the Golden Close Combat Badge of the Wehrmacht.
