At the end of World War II, the U.S. Army in Germany established the so-called "Labor Service" (LS). The main task of the "Labor Service" was to relieve the American troops in Europe and to support them in everyday tasks. The explanations in this brochure were intended to give the public and the LS men an insight into the history of the development of the German "Labor Service" organisation, the service group of the U.S. Army whose high standard of performance has become proverbial in Allied and German circles.
It also opens up another insight: the countless German LS men in the black uniform helped as outstanding ambassadors of the German people and contributed significantly to promoting and strengthening Germany's reputation. It was a combative ordeal that the German LS units underwent in the course of their almost five-year existence - but it can be said today that they fulfilled their lofty task in the best possible way in every way.
