The first large new ships of the young German Navy were the frigates and destroyers. In addition to the destroyers of the "Hamburg" class, which are dealt with in "Schiff Profile" No. 21, the German Navy placed an order from March 1957 for the construction of six ships of the "Köln" class, or F-120 class, as they were later renamed.
This booklet accompanies the varied history of the frigates "Köln", "Emden", "Augsburg", "Karlsruhe", "Lübeck" and "Braunschweig" from the laying of the keel, through their operational voyages to the end of their service.
