Landing craft were already being considered during the initial conceptualisation of the young German Navy. As the boats from the former stocks of the US Navy and Royal Navy had all been used in the war, they were decommissioned in the mid/end of the 1960s.
As a result, the self-constructed landing craft of the 520 class were built from 1964 onwards. In the early 1960s, these planned boats were referred to as multi-purpose landing craft 63, which goes back to the design year. The order was placed with Howaldtswerke (HDW) in Hamburg in 1964.
This booklet deals with the history of the landing craft of the German Navy in general, and in particular with all built multipurpose landing craft of the 520 class.
