Since the Russian invasion of neighbouring Ukraine on 24 February 2022 at the latest, the importance of armoured combat troops has once again become the focus of public attention. Within the Bundeswehr, the terms armoured force and armoured troops are used in relation to armoured combat troops. What initially differs by just one letter, however, is much more: while the armoured troops with their main weapon system, the Leopard 2 main battle tank, are highly mobile and capable of long-range action against armoured enemy forces while mounted in various armour stands, the armoured forces also include the mechanised infantry, which are equipped with the Marder infantry fighting vehicle or the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. The Panzergrenadiers operate both mounted in the front and rear fighting compartment of their infantry fighting vehicles and as an infantry squad dismounted from the vehicle with small arms and anti-tank weapons. The main principles of armoured troops in action are above all their high dynamics and speed, which they can use, for example, in assault operations in difficult terrain, but also in open or built-up areas. This booklet provides you with an up-to-date insight into the organisation, equipment with weapons and equipment and the training activities of the Panzergrenadierruppe with its eleven battalions.
