After a short time, the Crusades were also instrumentalised to realise purely secular power interests, especially those directed against the Byzantine Empire. Soon the term crusade was extended not only to wars against Muslims, but also against people declared heretics by the Roman Church (see Albigensians). This circumstance gave the papacy a strong political and military weapon. Nevertheless, the religious aspect, especially in the crusades to the East, should not be underestimated. After the capture of Jerusalem in 1099, the fallen were celebrated as martyrs. Often the interests of the warring parties and those of the fighting troops were far apart.
