In January-February 1979, Reforger, a winter deployment exercise by the US armed forces, took place for the second time. One of the objectives of the exercise was to test the deployment of US reinforcements to Europe under extreme weather conditions and to draw lessons for the future in order to optimize the process. However, during this maneuver, poor and unpredictable Central European winter weather hampered the maneuver to an unprecedented degree and posed a particular challenge for the command. The centerpiece of Reforger 79 was the corps combat exercise Certain Sentinel in the Middle Franconia region. This publication uses impressive photos to show the battle of American, German, and Canadian units not only against a powerful armored enemy on the battlefield, but also against the harsh Franconian weather.
