The last decade of the Cold War was dominated by the introduction of state-of-the-art weapon systems for the American Army, most notably the revolutionary new M1 Abrams main battle tank. This publication traces the introduction and use of the Abrams in the variants M1 and IPM1 in detail on the basis of numerous manoeuvre photos from the USAREUR area in Germany 1982-88. In addition, there are field reports on the Abrams, background information on the manoeuvres and the US units involved, illustrations of the camouflage schemes and special paints, information on bumper codes, as well as a special chapter on the manoeuvre markings of the M1 units. Never before have the early years of the M1 Abrams been traced in such depth.
