Nero (37-68 AD) is without doubt one of the most colourful rulers of the Roman Empire. The last years of Nero's reign in particular still characterise his image today as that of a tyrant, a cruel persecutor of Christians and a megalomaniac arsonist. But is that really the whole picture? The emperor's passion was for the arts, he himself performed as an actor, musician and charioteer and built the immense "domus aurea", his golden palace. He was very popular with the people for a long time - like no other emperor before him, he inspired the masses with "bread and games". The richly illustrated volume accompanying the 2016 exhibition in Trier paints a comprehensive picture of Nero, focussing on the politician as well as the builder, the self-promoter as well as the artist and, last but not least, the man in all his relationships and placing him in the context of his time.
