Following the great success of his illustrated book "Eisenbahnen im östlichen Ruhrgebiet" (Railways in the Eastern Ruhr Area), Michael Schenk, who has been working for the German Railway History Society for 30 years, now presents the eagerly awaited volume "Eisenbahnen im westlichen Ruhrgebiet" (Railways in the Western Ruhr Area). In the 19th century, the railway became the engine of industrialisation. On the one hand, it created the infrastructural prerequisites for the emerging industries in the Ruhr region, and on the other hand, it itself generated an enormous demand for iron, steel and machinery. With over 200 mostly unpublished photographs from the period 1870 to 1975, Schenk presents the history of the railway on the lines from Duisburg via Mühlheim to Oberhausen, with detours to Essen and Dinslaken. The concisely and expertly explained photographs from the author's collection and private archives recall the magic of historical technology and the flair of a bygone era and captivate not only railway fans.
