The study focuses on the city of Dresden after the devastating bombing raids of February 1945. After the war, the "death" of Dresden became a plaything of ideology and politics. Depending on one's point of view, the casualty figures were glossed over or exaggerated. Only since the opening of the East German archives after the fall of communism have reliable estimates been possible. Wolfgang Schaarschmidt experienced and survived the inferno of Dresden. On the basis of new sources, he traces the often dubious play of politics with the victims, puts the hitherto reported numbers of victims to the test - and comes to surprising conclusions.
