The F-111, which despite a rocky start, ultimately proved to be a very capable fighter-bomber for the U.S. and Australian Air Forces, was born out of Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara's desire to compel the the US Navy and Air Force to use a single aircraft for all tactical missions.
The wish of the US Secretary of Defence from the Vietnam War era apparently did not come true; the F-111 was nevertheless built and, despite some initial difficulties, proved to be a very useful tactical fighter-bomber that remained in service from the final phase of the Vietnam War until after the Gulf War in 1991.
