The technical transition from sailing ship to steamship took several decades. It was not until 1889 that the first ocean-going steamer without any sail was put into service.
A sail steamer is a steam ship with additional sails. These ships were widespread in the second half of the 19th century and into the 20th century as cargo ships, passenger ships and warships.
