Georg Zirk was a German who lived in Poland at the beginning of the Second World War. Polish persecution, which led to the death of four family members in 1939, prompted him to join the German Air Force, where he became a navigator. From 1943, Zirk flew 81 combat missions, 65 of which were at night, on the Eastern Front on Heinkel He 111 bombers of Fighter Wing 55 "Greif" and Fighter Wing 4 "General Wever". It was deployed from the Black Sea to the gates of Berlin and took part in thirteen major battles: from support missions for the army in Kursk and Velikie Luki to the massive bombing raids on Soviet railway lines during Operation "Bomberstrom Ost" and the successful attack on 21 and 22 June 1944 on the Ukrainian airfield of Poltava and the USAAF B-17 bombers stationed there during Operation "Frantic". After the German surrender in May 1945, Zirk was taken prisoner by the Russians, but was able to escape and return to his native Poland. There, the Polish communist government sent him to a prison camp, where he remained until the summer of 1947, when he managed to escape.
