After the armistice and the establishment of the Italian Social Republic, rebuilding the army proved to be a difficult undertaking. The Germans rejected this idea outright and only relented when the war situation deteriorated, allowing Italian units to be formed and armed. The few tank units that were created were largely the result of individual initiatives by a few determined officers and therefore remained small. The chronic shortage of armoured vehicles meant that many units had to resort to a mixture of equipment, often sourced from Royal Army depots. In some cases, however, this shortage was offset by personal relationships and trust between the commanders of the Italian tank units and the German military authorities.
