This volume deals with the career of balloon engineers during the French Revolutionary Wars. At the end of the 18th century, there was a military fascination with balloons, which continued unabated during the French Revolution. By 1793, it was soon adopted by the Committee of Public Safety as a revolutionary military function and then further developed by France's next government, the Directory, which continued to promote military ballooning. The campaign history of the balloon engineers is presented, as are the events surrounding their disbandment in 1799. The Directory's decision to abandon military ballooning in 1799 was not carried over to Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, where the unit continued to fulfil one of its main tasks as a propaganda distributor in Napoleon's headquarters staff until the end of the campaign in 1801.
