Geschütz and man. Carroballista was a Geschütz (ball list) mounted on a wheeled frame, a type of mobile field artillery. According to the Roman author Vegetius (Epitoma rei militaris II.25), each legion had 55 carroballistae, the arrows being bolt-shooters of the cheiroballistra type. Vegetius also says that each carroballista was transported by mules and/or by a contubernium (which meansßt ten soldiers).
