Prussia c. 1813. August Wilhelm Anton Neidhardt, later Neidhardt von Gneisenau, from 1814 Count Neidhardt von Gneisenau (* 27 October 1760 in Schildau; 23 August 1831 in Posen) was a Prussian field marshal general and army reformer. After participating in the American War of Independence in 1783 and the defence of Kolberg in 1807, he rose to military leadership and, together with Gerhard David von Scharnhorst, drove army reform. As chief of staff to Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, he played a major role in the victories over Napoleon in 1813-1815. Gneisenau is one of the most important army reformers of the wars of liberation. His most famous descendant was the resistance fighter against National Socialism Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg.
