The colourful and extensively worked standard uniform that dominated the picture until 1913 was divided into different types of uniform for different purposes, the basic outline of which still applies today. The parade uniform for ceremonial occasions, from which the formal suit or gala uniform for officers developed. A dress uniform for going out, the usually simpler day service uniform, the work uniform for dirty work for enlisted men and non-commissioned officers (cf. also: Drillich), and the field uniform.
