Prussia, 1900-1913. To be distinguished from the musicians, who were part of the regimental staff, were the minstrels (tambourines and buglers or cross-pipers) belonging to the companies of the foot troops and sailor detachments. Two to four of them were responsible for the company signal service; on the march they led the regimental music and the following troops with sounding music.
